2009-2010 Season

"View from the Bay"

The Oakland Youth Chorus was proud to perform as part of the studio audience on local ABC affiliate KGO’s "View from the Bay" Friday, April 30, at 3pm. Our stellar Chamber Ensemble inspired with a short a cappella selection from their signature piece, the spiritual“Steal Away”.

The Chamber Ensemble of the Oakland Youth Chorus features 9 talented young people, some of whom have been performing with the Oakland Youth Chorus since Elementary School. Under the direction of Choral Director, La Nell Martin, these high school students have blossomed into a professional a cappella ensemble whose repertoire ranges from Madrigals to today’s R and B to spirituals.

See KGO's website to watch the segment.

NOU LA TOUJOU!
A Benefit for Haiti

OYC and the First Unitarian Church of Oakland collaborated to produce Nou La Toujou!  The February 26, 2010 concert was electrifying, and the packed audience gave over $3000 to support the What If Foundation's relief efforts for children in Haiti.

The concert featured a host of fantastic performances, including the following:

-OYC students and faculty
-Keith Terry and Crosspulse, (with Evie Ladin, Steve Hogan and OYC teacher Bryan Dyer)
-Mo Rockin' Project featuring Khalil Shaheed
-Glass House with David Worm and Mark Vickness
-Eric and Suzy Thompson, Chad Manning and Alan Senauke

All musicians and staff volunteered their time for this event, and the First Unitarian Church of Oakland donated the space and sound engineer for the show.

Margaret Trost, Executive Director and Founder of What If Foundation said, "The food and water we're distributing through the Haitian community we are in partnership with in Port-au-Prince is keeping thousands of people alive.  Our food program has been described as a rare oasis in the city.  Your concert is going to help us keep the meals flowing at St. Clare's and will not only provide desperately needed nutrition, but also hope and solidarity."

Know that this year OYC is making a difference in lives of 800 youth and children in our community. If you are able, please consider making a donation to OYC this holiday season.

Again, a big THANK YOU to everyone for the dedication, time, energy and financial support you have given OYC and the children we serve over the year.
