How to Join the OYC Board Of Directors

OAKLAND YOUTH CHORUS BOARD RESPONSIBILITIES

OYC board terms are for two years, renewable twice. Board members must then take at least a year off to be considered for future terms.

Average board participation is 5 hours per month, with greater activity in some months than others.

Board meetings are 6:30-8:30 p.m. on the fourth Thursdays of the month, in the Starr King Room at the First Unitarian Church of Oakland, 685 14th Street, Oakland, CA.

Meetings and participation

Attend a minimum of 80% of regularly scheduled board meetings
Join at least one committee or take leadership in at least one board area and attend those meetings regularly
Read relevant materials in preparation for meetings

Planning

Plan for the organization's future by setting strategic direction

Set short and long term goals for OYC through strategic planning
Periodically review mission
Participate in planning retreats

Governance
Provide policy guidance for OYC

Periodically review bylaws, personnel and finance policies, and legal compliance
Develop new policies as necessary
Review policy proposals made by staff

Management Oversight

Hire, discharge if necessary, review, determine compensation for, and support the Executive Director.

Program Oversight

Be aware of OYC programs by responding to invitations to visit, inviting staff to board meetings for demonstrations, etc.
Monitor progress on strategic plan

Financial Oversight

In conjunction with Executive Director, develop annual agency budget.
Regularly review financial statements
Periodically meet with auditor

Fundraising

Actively participate in OYC fundraising activities including requesting donations from individuals, attending and selling tickets to OYC events, making connections with other resources, organizations or corporations on OYC’s behalf
Make a meaningful annual personal contribution

Community Representation

Serve as an ambassador for OYC in the community
Spread the word about OYC whenever possible
Allow us to use your name in OYC materials
